Highest population town you've ever sustained?

Postby AbsenteeSurgeon » Mon Mar 12, 2012 5:40 pm

I'm curious as to how big some of your towns have gotten and under what circumstances.

I once got mine up to 50 people. I was playing a normal map, and meta-gaming to see if I could fill the entire map with pig farms. My population steadily rose because of the abundance of food, and the bedrooms kept getting filled as I was carving them out of the rock. Eventually, the frequency of sieges meant that my town's happiness was sustained too low to get any more immigrants, and my people were wiped out. I did manage to severely lag the map scrolling with the amount of pigs I had in one section of the map :D

Over 200 population (pic of 186 pop). Every immigrant got a full set of armor upon entering the town. I didn't save when an unfair siege was started (as in a shedload of iron golems or something like that, that could literally wipe out every villager)... It took up a lot of space though, mainly underground ;)

Wow, impressive. I assume this was on a normal map?

Also, is there any way to protect yourself from those types of sieges? Could you wall yourself in with farms and trees and keep the waves of baddies outside and confused?

Some people go (play) this way. But then your immigrants will not find the way to your town either.

@Absentee, mixed actually.

For protection, I walled in my town, with here and there doors. I noticed enemies generally wouldn't attack the doors if those doors are locked ;) It also provides a good choke point for creating raiding parties by assigning a chopping order and when the first couple villagers are near the door, lock it and wait until there is a big group of villagers before unlocking.

Trees and farms are passable for monsters afaik. So that wouldn't work ;)

@Lonestar, thanks.

I meant putting them inside of the walls, not using them as walls lol

@ChaosPWNS, I got really lucky with sieges in the first few months of my map, and very unlucky in the last month of my existence

Two hundred while sleeping, then I decided it was good, also didn't bothered building more personal rooms and quit Towns till these updates came.

When the game really comes out, no alpha and no beta, I will try reaching more. At the moment getting a high population is easier than ever before thanks to the chicken farms, which can hold infinite chickens on just 9 squares as far as I know. You only do have to make sure you have to save on a regular base after 150 townies, because the sieges becomes (near) unbeatable.
