Enemy ideas - fan art

Postby broodovermind » Tue May 01, 2012 4:57 am

I do vidya art for a living and felt like doing some quick doodles. I don't have much experience with pixel art, so any tips would be awesome.

I would imagine this first guy spawning in either a large mushroom farm or maybe in a dungeon near some wild cave mushrooms?

One very basic solution would be to do a "texture pack" - use your artwork as the image for an existing enemy by replacing the picture in the graphics file.

Alternatively, you can copy the code for an existing enemy in the living_entities file, change the name and direct the graphics data to a modified template using your images. Then, just copy the genreation code of the original monster your new monster is based on in the gen_livingentities file, and again change the names to the name of your monster. Be sure to check the campaigns folders to make sure it spawns everywhere it should, although you shouldn't need to do this for dungeon monsters.

The second option is really only worthwhile if you want to keep the original monsters as well. bear in mind that you will have made the job of surviving more difficult if you do, so it's probaly worth lowering all the enemy spawn numbers to balance things out.

Hope this helps, but either way that mushroom trooper is kewl :D

Wow! Very helpful!

I plan on doing a few more little guys. Maybe 5 or so. Stuff like, ents (spawns in woods, drops wood) , haunted armor (drops armor), Observer/beholder, gargoyle, mimic, and some kind of kraken or crab to add a water based enemy (spawns on tiles near water above or below ground. I'll post everything here.

Thanks!

These sound like cool ideas as well. The ents could easily use froggy or brownie code, any dungeon monsters would work for the others. The only hitch I can see is that nothing lives on or in water, but you could do crabs to spawn on the beach using the snakecrab code - just don't add them to desert worlds

Really glad I could help :D

The snake idea is pretty good, thanks!

For the mushroom guys I have it set up so that they are about as weak as chickens, but can fight a little. They spawn from any kind of cave mushroom, and if fought drop another cave mushroom. They spawn at the same rate as ghosts.

I think I'm gonna work on the sandworm or the "sea" creatures next.

When you make these, please post them for us to download.

Also, if it's not too much trouble, would you be willing to make your mods modloader compatible?

Yeah, this will absolutely be available to download as I make significant progress, same goes for the modloader. Looks easy enough to do. I'll have some new stuff by the end of the week.

Also, to the Towns devs, feel free to use anything I make for the game. It would be really great to see something I made in a future version of the game :D

quick sneak peak at the ent. There appears to already be code for one in the game, guess we'll see how they work.

Next is the sandworm? maybe a "sea" creature?
