Need them to put eating ahead of finishing tasks and protecting..

Probably not when he was sleeping, because I am looking at mine when they sleep. Sometimes, while they sleep, they go up and eat something. With ZZZZ and stuff, they just go up and take some roast or something.

River wrote:So my town of about 20 is fully functional, and nobody has starved yet. I do however have a few theories on what's happening in the above cases based on what my townies do:

1) Food has been rebalanced. You can't feed your townies the same stuff you used to and expect the same results. If all you have to eat is a really low hunger-filling food, and they eat that then set off on a far off task, it's likely that they slow down in hunger mode in the middle of the task, possibly slowing down enough to make the task last long enough to starve them. This can be solved be supplying them with more filling foods, so that they complete their tasks at full speed.

2) You're on the border of having enough food production to feed your town. Previously, if you were out of food and somebody hit starving status, they would lock up and do nothing till food was available, which as we all know was really annoying. However now, if you have a towny hungry and no food is available, instead of standing there waiting for food, he'll pick a new task, and just perform it slowly. This means that even if somebody cooks some food right after the guy hit hungry, he's already started a new task so won't look for that food till he's done with it. If he gets really unlucky, when he finally finishes the task, at reduced speeds no less, somebody else will have eaten the food and there will once again be no food available, so he'll start a new task. If you ALWAYS have food available this isn't a risk, but any time you're empty you open yourself to this problem, where starving people start new work instead of waiting for food. Hunger lock actually had a purpose! :P

I suspect the second case happens often now. Previously I've frequently had times where a few townies go into hunger lock for a brief moment, then snap out of it as food is prepared. If I played the same now, all those people who briefly stopped for hunger lock before, would now continue working, and risk starving to death if the new job they picked was a particularly long one.

I know that you are a very known guy here and that you really have some high amout of knowlegde here, but that's not what's happening here... as I had already stated before.

Some more 2 guys died here today from starvation. So, I really don't know what to do... Because I have 20 constant Roast, 20 Omelettes, 20 Breads, 20 Pear Pies, 10 Apple Pies, 10 Meat Pies, 10 Ham and Eggs... I had never run out ouf food before and they still die! I don't send them to dungeons to Haul stuff and they die! I don't send them to build very complex stuff (walls and roads are very fast to produce! one stone or wood, masonry/carpentry, place it where it is suposed to be! And it's all freaking close to each other!!!

The thing that I've noted is that sometimes, sa I said before, they will start some task even if they have the hunger icon (just the bread)... and sometimes it is very close to the time when they start the hunger lock icon (with the red X).

The real funny thing is that when they finish a task with the hunger lock icon and just go to eat something, the icon CHANGES back to Hunger Icon before they reach the food!! The change happens really in the transition where he finished his work and goes for some food. Weird, isn't it? Is this some mechanics so the townie can walk faster to the food?

Just lost two people due to starvation - the work ethics of 0.45 townies is commendable, but their common sense is sadly lacking.

As soon as there is something to build where the mats are maybe 100 squares from the workbench, there is a definite risk. (100 squares - about half one side of the map)

Needless to say that something like this is more than frustating. Especially as hunger lock was something where I knew how to avoid it, but the new behaviour: there is nothing to be done except only use near resources, and get stuck very fast.

Ok, it seems that the issue is due to the townies workinf for a full day in the same task!!

So, now that townies doesn't stuck when are hungry, we decided to increase the starvation time to 2 days and also tuned the "malus" low speed.

In the next patch a citizen will run at 100% speed when starts to get hungry and that % will be lowered gradually until he reach the 1st day of hungry (at the end of the day he will walk at 20% speed). The second day of hungry he will walk at 20%. The third day..... well, he will die at the end of 2nd day.

Just happened to me. The townie in question starved to death in his room while sleeping about 50 squares away from 8 pieces of pie.

For now, it seems the best way to fix it is if you see a townie working while he has the starving icon under him, turn him into a soldier, and he will quit work to go eat.

supermalparit wrote:We are looking at that issue too.

Can you give us more information?
Like, what kind of task the starved citizen was doing.... maybe sleepeing or fighting?

I've found that they mostly do this while performing tasks with a lot of steps. Like bringing wood/torches etc to mineshafts, or putting up farm animal plots. Anything that involves 3-5 steps and they'll completely ignore their hunger and work themselves to death trying to complete the task instead of "taking a break" so to speak to go munch on something.

Edit: Also soldiers set to "guard" mode will completely ignore their hunger/sleep and run to the rescue usually dooming themselves to starvation.

in 0.45a starving of lack of food now only happens after 2 calendar days
so if you are building stuff miles away from your resources where it used to take more than 1 calendar day to complete the task you may get away with it now. however if it takes 2 calendar days to do then you'll still starve due to bad playing / planning / building practices
