Do I have to restart after a wipe?

Postby CobraA1 » Wed Aug 15, 2012 5:24 pm

Okay, newcomer question: Do I have to restart completely after a wipe, or is there some mechanic for recovering?

I do recall in Dwarf Fortress I could regain a lost fort, albeit at a price - it basically became a hollow shell (lost all of my zones/stockpiles/utilities), with items scattered around the map.
When all is said and done, will you have said more than you have done?

Nope no way to continue an old map yet in a new version.

Or if you mean if you lost all your people .. then also no.. though it could be nice if it was partially destroyed and items scattered and also partially destroyed.. so it seemed ransacked..:P

Maybe something to suggest..

.. Might be fun to do that with someone elses map as well.. build something out of the ruins of someone elses.. hm..

Yeah, I mean that - I guess I got the term "wipe" from playing World of Warcraft ;).

If you so aptly put it, wiped, you could always place a few personal rooms, take away any outstanding orders and sit there for 10minutes, hoping to attract some new immigrants.

But a more productive way would be to simply start again. Obviously you did something wrong the 1st time and this fresh slate will allow you to do things a bit differently this time :)

Well, it happened via a siege, and I think the immigrants would just be killed again. I'll just restart.

And I had just found iron and coal, sigh.

Perhaps time to invest in defenses for the next game - how effective are the traps?

Traps are anywhere from flawless defence to pretty decent to worthless..

It depends how you use them.

A simple trap box can be used to make a flawless siege defense where you gain all loot for no risk..

A trap hall can be pretty effective if done.. PSB_ (poison, spike, bear trap.. space.) over and over. This deals out basically 200 dmg every 100 or so ticks for the trap set + constant slow and stun half the time.. is pretty effective for slowing down a siege.. the longer the maze the more effective it is.
Topic about that:

Just some traps placed at the gates of town will do some but not a ton.. If you go with this I'd suggest bear traps and try to fight the siege on the bear traps so after the first one triggers it they all pile on it.. once all on it when it is activated it'll hit all the mobs.

All traps are AOE if multiple mobs are standing on it when it goes off.

Humm, how do traps affect immigrants? Do I have to worry about that?

Nope they won't hurt them, or heroes.. They only hurt enemies and friendly mobs.

Though if you go with a trap box, you need to remember while mobs are in it dieing you won't be able to get more people.. but that isn't usually a problem.

I also am not 100% positive the path-finding will go well with the new update.. but it should.

We also lack wooden fence now .. and the stone wall with a little hedge on it is the only fence.. So you would have to go with that or 2 high wall blocks or thin walls.
