He has to travel the length each time for each resource needed, the wood, stone and lets not forget chasing down the cow. A single townie will perform all these actions in a row before doing anything else. So after like 2 resources, he drops dead of exhaustion, and I don't blame him. Best way to prevent this is doing your best to keep resources and projects close together.
