Transfering files from a preordered game to the next version

Postby Azeyrt » Fri Apr 20, 2012 9:09 pm

I was looking at the support forum today and I saw you can't transfer a demo into a pre-ordered game but is it possible to transfer, let's say for instance your .42 game to .45 when it comes out

Please bear in mind we add LOADS of new underlying content each patch. New systems, new mechanics. Your old games have things that these don't. Imagine you trying to load your saved game on a version with the new hero mechanics. Your game won't know how to interpret them and crash. It's a shame, it truly is, but there is no solution at this time. 0.39 will not be compatible with 0.38, neither will 0.40 with 0.39.

There might be some compatibility later on when what goes into the game is simply content in the strictest sense, but it is literally impossible to make it compatible when there are engine changes.

Keep in mind you are test driving the car as it is being built, and we have to take parts out to make new ones. It's a crappy analogy but it works,

Once again, on all our behalfs

SORRY!

No, later in development (probably after or leading up to final release) the number of changes between each version will be minimal, and there will likely be a converter. But considering the sheer number of changes between 0.42 and .45 it would be impossible. Also, many 0.45 features are spawned during map creation, so moving them from 0.42 would reap you no benefits :)

What about from 0.45a to 0.45b? I dug around my harddrive and found what I believe to be the save file, which was labeled simple "0.45a" so I renamed it, changing the a to a b, assuming it would work. But, when started 0.45b and clicked on "continue map", it did its usual 5minutes of loading before simply shutting down. Can a save from 0.45a be transfered to 0.45b?

I get that when I try to load the world in .45b works fine with .45a.. However I did use the pear quick fix and changed it so my plain trees spread way faster so they would be saved from extinction (I had 2 Bushes left..).

So my fault?

Yes.... I say... no, my fault. We can confirm that savegames between 0.45a and 0.45b are are not compatible :(

in the update topic for .45b - it sucks I know..
